The Department of Information Systems, Business Statistics and Operations Management at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is offering PhD positions within its Business Statistics Group. This program provides rigorous training in mathematical statistics and its applications to finance, economics, and data science. Students will engage in research areas such as financial econometrics, high-dimensional statistics, machine learning, nonparametric statistics, portfolio theory, and stochastic processes, working closely with internationally recognized faculty. The PhD program consists of a 2-year MPhil phase focused on foundational coursework and a 3-year PhD phase dedicated to academic research and dissertation writing. Applicants should have a strong background in mathematics, probability theory, and statistics, with an interest in applying statistical models to finance and economics. MPhil and PhD students receive a tax-exempt stipend of HK$19,135 per month, with outstanding candidates eligible for the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme, which increases the stipend to HK$28,400 per month plus additional benefits.
