The Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research (MPIP), in close collaboration with the University Medical Center Mainz (Dermatology Clinic), is offering three PhD positions for the period 2025–2028. The research areas include nanocarriers for proximity-labelling, in-vivo evaluation of nanocarriers for neurodegenerative disease, and the design of protein-based artificial cells for intercellular communication. Research Topics:
- ROS release from photocatalytic/enzymatic nanocarriers (Proximity-labelling): Develop and apply strategies to map reactive-oxygen-species (ROS) release from nanocarriers activated by light or enzymes, using biological assays and quantitative proteomics to identify ROS-modified proteins and signaling pathways.
- In-vivo evaluation of nanocarriers for neurodegenerative disease: Establish pipelines for quantitative assessment of nanocarrier delivery across the blood-brain barrier, including in-vitro BBB models and in-vivo pharmacokinetic studies in rodent models of neurodegeneration.
- Protein-based artificial cells for artificial-natural cell communication: Design protein-rich artificial cells capable of exchanging signals with living cells, engineer protein-functionalized compartments, and analyze intercellular communication using live-cell microscopy and flow cytometry.
Eligibility: Applicants must hold an excellent Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Biochemistry, Biomedical Chemistry, Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Biotechnology, or a closely related field. Candidates should demonstrate an outstanding academic record, strong motivation, and willingness to acquire expertise in relevant techniques such as cell- and molecular-biology, protein chemistry, bioconjugation, proteomics, BBB modelling, or synthetic-cell engineering. Teamwork, initiative, and excellent communication skills are essential.
