The Department of Accounting and Finance at Lancaster University Management School (LUMS) is now accepting applications for its PhD Programme in Accounting and Finance, commencing October 2026. This prestigious programme offers the opportunity to work alongside world-leading academics in a dynamic and innovative department, recognized internationally for its research excellence and business school accreditations (AMBA, EQUIS, AACSB). LUMS was ranked first in the UK for research power in the 2014 and 2021 Research Excellence Framework.

PhD students will benefit from a comprehensive research environment, including access to state-of-the-art databases, a strong seminar series, a senior visitors program, and dedicated office space. The department provides funding for conference and research visits, scientific computing facilities, and IT support. The doctoral training includes a portfolio of PhD-level courses and seminars covering finance theory, econometrics, and research methodology. Upon completion of coursework, students will undertake original research and write a thesis under the supervision of two subject experts, ensuring their work contributes new knowledge to the academic community.

Studentships are available for full-time candidates, offering a generous living allowance and a full fee waiver for four years. Both Home and Overseas applicants are eligible, subject to academic criteria: a relevant Masters degree (UK or equivalent) with Distinction level performance (overall and in dissertation), a Bachelors degree with First-Class Honours, and English language entry requirements. Successful applicants should demonstrate the potential for world-class research and be able to undertake teaching duties within LUMS during their scholarship.
