About this position

The International Graduate School for Dynamics in Logistics (IGS) at the University of Bremen offers a structured doctoral programme for early-stage researchers from around the world. The programme is embedded in the Bremen Research Cluster for Dynamics in Logistics (LogDynamics), a collaborative network involving five departments: Production Engineering, Business Studies/Economics, Mathematics/Computer Science, Physics/Electrical Engineering, and Law. Associated partners include BIBA (Bremer Institut für Produktion und Logistik GmbH), the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL), Constructor University Bremen, and several international universities.

IGS provides a multidisciplinary environment focused on fundamental and applied research in logistics, with close collaboration with industry partners. Research topics include business models, decision processes, economic analyses, holistic interdisciplinary methods for modelling, analysis and simulation, adaptive and dynamic control methods, and the synchronization of material, information, decision, and financial flows. The programme aims to foster excellence in education and research, offering opportunities for international conferences and active participation in the biannual International Conference on Dynamics in Logistics (LDIC).

The curriculum is designed as a full-time research course, integrating individual doctoral projects within disciplinary research groups. Doctoral candidates benefit from collective thematic introductions, subject-specific courses, interdisciplinary colloquia, dialogue forums, excursions, and individual coaching in soft and complementary skills. International elements are embedded throughout, with guest lecturers, language training, and intercultural skills development. Most doctoral candidates have a non-German background, promoting cross-cultural cooperation.

Applicants must hold a Master's degree (or equivalent) in relevant fields such as Production Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Economics, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Logistics, or Law, with excellent academic records. A preliminary research proposal and research plan are required. English is the working language, with minimum TOEFL or IELTS scores specified. Basic German familiarity is recommended. There are no tuition fees, but a semester contribution of approximately 350 EUR covers public transportation. Living costs are estimated at least 1,036 EUR per month.

IGS does not offer scholarships or funding, but supports candidates in applying for third-party grants. Accommodation is not provided, but support is available through the University of Bremen's Welcome Center. Doctoral candidates have access to career advisory services, specialist counselling, buddy programmes, visa support, and all university facilities, including the BYRD support centre for early career researchers.

Applicants must hold a Master's degree equivalent to a German university level degree (Master or Diplom, with thesis) in Production Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Economics, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Logistics, or Law, with exceptionally good marks. A preliminary research proposal describing a research question, methods, and literature references is required, along with a research plan. English language proficiency is mandatory: TOEFL (600 written, 250 computer-based, 95 iBT, plus TWE 5.0) or IELTS (Band 7.0, minimum 6.0 per module), with test results not older than 24 months. Candidates with a degree from an English-speaking country must provide proof of their English language educational background. Basic German familiarity is recommended.
