The British Heart Foundation funded 4-year Doctoral Training Programme (DTP) offers an exciting opportunity for aspiring cardiovascular scientists to join a collaborative, cohort-based PhD programme shared between the University of Edinburgh and the University of Glasgow. Both institutions are renowned for their research excellence and commitment to advancing health sciences. The programme is designed to develop scientifically agile, forward-looking, and critically thinking researchers equipped to tackle complex health challenges in cardiovascular science.

The central theme, “The vascular niche in health and disease,” provides a multidisciplinary platform for research, integrating vascular biology, biomedical sciences, chemistry, and physics. The DTP is structured around four pillars: Thematic Courses in Vascular Biology, Transferable Skills and Career Development, Research Culture and Community, and Project Design and Execution. Students will benefit from shared teaching sessions, annual scientific symposia, and opportunities to build lasting scientific networks across cohorts.

Successful candidates will receive a fully funded studentship, covering full tuition fees, a stipend, an annual Research Training Support Grant, and an annual Travel Grant. While Home and International students are eligible, international candidates must cover their own visa, NHS, and relocation costs. The programme aims to foster a vibrant research community and support students in developing both technical and transferable skills for a future career in cardiovascular research.

Applicants should hold a BSc (Hons) degree (First or Upper Second class or equivalent) or a Masters qualification (Distinction or Merit) in biomedical sciences, bioinformatics, physics, or chemistry. The programme is ideal for highly motivated individuals seeking a gateway to a career in cardiovascular research.
