PhD Opportunity: Assessing the Environmental Sustainability of Future Launchers (SLICE, DC13)

The Politecnico di Torino, one of Europe’s leading engineering universities, invites applications for a fully funded PhD position as part of the Horizon Europe MSCA SLICE Doctoral Network. The project focuses on the environmental sustainability of space launch systems, bridging the gap between space engineering and climate science. The research aims to develop analytical models for predicting chemical emissions from various launcher configurations, engines, and propellants, with the goal of supporting the European Green Deal and sustainable access to space.

Research Focus: The doctoral candidate will define a taxonomy of future launchers, model and simulate rocket engine architectures, examine combustion processes, and develop analytical formulations for emissions prediction. The project includes integration of these models into commercial design tools and comparative analysis of launcher configurations. The research will generate validated databases and novel analytical tools for conceptual design, contributing to climate impact assessment and mitigation strategies for space transportation.

Training & Collaboration: The candidate will join an international group of over 30 researchers and participate in secondments at Astos Solutions GmbH (Germany) and ISAE (France), gaining hands-on experience in software integration and combustion modelling. The SLICE network offers a structured training program, international conferences, and outreach activities, preparing the candidate for a career at the intersection of engineering and environmental science.

Funding & Benefits: The position is funded for 36 months under MSCA regulations, offering a competitive salary, living and mobility allowances, and, if eligible, a family allowance. Social security and health insurance are included. The candidate will benefit from the resources and international network of Politecnico di Torino and the SLICE consortium.

Eligibility & Requirements: Applicants must hold or be near completion of a MSc (or equivalent) in aerospace engineering, physics, or a related field. Essential skills include simulation, optimisation, modelling, ecodesign, and strong English communication. Candidates must comply with the MSCA Mobility Rule (not have resided in Italy for more than 12 months in the past 36 months) and must not already hold a doctoral degree. Essential skills include solid knowledge of computer science and informatics (simulation, optimisation, modelling tools), product and process engineering (space engineering, launch vehicle design, system design, multidisciplinary design and optimisation, ecodesign, global sensitivity analysis), and excellent communication skills in English. Ability to work independently and in teams, problem-solving skills, and readiness to travel for secondments are required. Applicants must be eligible to enroll in a PhD program at Politecnico di Torino. Desired skills include knowledge in ecodesign, climate sciences, life-cycle assessments, and project management. Candidates must comply with the Horizon Europe MSCA Mobility Rule and must not have resided or carried out their main activity in Italy for more than 12 months in the 36 months before recruitment. Doctoral candidates must not have been awarded a doctoral degree at the date of recruitment.
