About this position

The Optical Quantum Metrology research group at the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics ITWM, in collaboration with the Laboratory for Lightwave Metrology, is seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join a cutting-edge project at the intersection of physics, photonics, and biomedical applications. This position is part of a prestigious Max-Planck-Fraunhofer cooperation project focused on developing innovative photonic measurement techniques based on interferometry and nonlinear optics. The research aims to enable spectroscopic measurements across the full physiologically relevant concentration range of molecules in biological fluids and gases, with significant implications for medicine, biology, and industrial material characterization.

The successful candidate will contribute to the development and setup of an ultra-stable, compact laser system for generating ultra-short and ultra-broadband laser pulses, as well as a novel enhancement-cavity-based spectrometer for the analysis of medically relevant gases. The project offers a unique opportunity to work at the forefront of optical quantum metrology, with access to state-of-the-art facilities and mentoring from leading scientists, including university supervision at RPTU in Kaiserslautern under the chair of Prof. Dr. Ioachim Pupeza.

Applicants should hold a Master's degree in experimental physics or a related field, ideally with a specialization in photonics, laser physics, or nonlinear optics. Experience with optical laser setups and strong English skills are required. The position is open to candidates of all backgrounds, and the institute is committed to diversity and inclusion, offering support and accommodations for applicants with disabilities.

The position is funded as part of the Max-Planck-Fraunhofer cooperation, with salary and benefits according to Fraunhofer standards. The role offers prospects for further education, training, and authorship in high-impact publications. The position is also available on a part-time basis.

To apply, submit your application via the Fraunhofer job portal. For further information, contact Prof. Dr. Ioachim Pupeza. Join a dynamic, international team and contribute to groundbreaking research in optical quantum metrology and its applications in medicine and industry.
