About this position

This PhD position in Molecular and Structural Microbiology – Microbiome Science is offered at the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) in Hamburg, Germany, one of the world's leading research centres. The successful candidate will join the Centre for Structural Systems Biology (CSSB), an international and interdisciplinary hub where scientists collaborate to investigate the structure, dynamics, and function of pathogens and their interactions with hosts. The project is based in the Sondermann lab, which focuses on deciphering molecular processes that determine bacterial interactions within microbial communities.

The PhD research will center on the type VI secretion system of Bacteroidota present in the mammalian intestine, contributing to a Germany-wide network dedicated to illuminating gene functions of the human intestinal microbiota. The position offers opportunities for collaboration with local and national research groups, including close partnership with Prof. Unterweger at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München and participation in consortium activities. The candidate will be expected to present and publish research results and actively engage as a member of the research group.

Applicants should be passionate about microbiology and eager to develop professionally. A Master’s degree in biosciences (or near completion) is required, along with experience in molecular microbiology, structural biology, or protein biochemistry. Strong teamwork skills and excellent English communication and writing abilities are essential. The position is limited to three years, with the possibility of extension, and is located at the CSSB on the DESY campus, which is easily accessible by public transport.

DESY provides a unique working environment with ultramodern research infrastructure, flexible working hours, family-friendly policies, health management, and occupational pension provision. PhD students receive a monthly salary of 65% of the payment of remuneration group 13 TVöD (Federal Government), with additional benefits such as a financial supplement for a German job ticket. Scientific training is provided at one of Europe’s leading research infrastructures, and students will be members of the Graduate School Life of Kiel University and a Germany-wide microbiome science network.

DESY does not grant doctoral degrees directly but collaborates with the University of Kiel, so candidates must meet the University of Kiel’s doctoral admission requirements. The institution promotes equal opportunities and diversity, strongly encouraging women and severely disabled persons to apply. Applications should include a letter of motivation, CV, relevant certificates, and two letters of reference, submitted via the DESY application portal. For further information, contact Prof. Holger Sondermann at [email protected].

For more details and to apply, visit the DESY career page or the application portal. The deadline for applications is January 16, 2026.
