About this position

The Fraunhofer Institute for Translational Medicine and Pharmacology ITMP, Göttingen site, is offering a PhD student position in the department of Prof. Stefan Jakobs, focusing on Protein Biochemistry and MINFLUX Super-Resolution Microscopy. The research group specializes in high-resolution and automated microscopy, with a primary emphasis on developing and applying state-of-the-art super-resolution microscopy techniques to address biologically and disease-relevant questions. The project leverages advanced imaging technologies, including MINFLUX, to study protein motion and import mechanisms in mitochondria, particularly through the TOM complex, which is crucial for cellular function and implicated in neurodegenerative disorders and myopathies.

MINFLUX microscopy enables unprecedented optical and temporal resolution, making it ideal for tracking single labeled cargo proteins in living cells. The research aims to establish labeling techniques, isolate proteins, assemble protein complexes in vitro, and systematically assess disease-associated cellular phenotypes. The project is highly interdisciplinary, involving collaborations with clinicians, industry partners, and the Max Planck Institute for Multidisciplinary Sciences (MPI NAT). PhD students will have access to a broad range of techniques and facilities, and are encouraged to participate in PhD programs in collaboration with the University of Göttingen, present at conferences, and publish in scientific journals.

Applicants should hold a Master’s or equivalent degree in Biology, Biochemistry, or related fields, and be proficient in cell culture, molecular biology, and protein biochemistry. Knowledge of cell signaling pathways and super-resolution microscopy techniques is desirable. Strong English language skills and advanced interpersonal and communication abilities are required. The position offers a high degree of creative freedom, integration into a supportive and innovative team, flexible working hours, remote work options, and excellent professional development opportunities. Additional benefits include 30 days of vacation, personal retirement benefits (VBL), annual special payment, capital-forming benefits, subsidies for the Germany ticket, corporate benefits, and access to the extensive Fraunhofer network.

The appointment, remuneration, and social security benefits are based on the public-sector collective wage agreement (TVöD). The Fraunhofer Institute values diversity and inclusion, and provides adaptable solutions for applicants with disabilities. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability. The weekly working time is 39 hours, with part-time options available. The research campus fosters a collegial atmosphere and encourages the implementation of innovative ideas.

To apply, submit your application online via the provided link. You will receive an automatic confirmation of receipt, and the selection committee will contact you regarding next steps. For further information about the research and the institute, visit the provided web pages or contact Prof. Dr. Stefan Jakobs by email.
