About this position

The University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) is a leading institution in research, education, and healthcare, committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment. Within the Institute of Molecular Virology and Tumor Virology, a PhD position is available for a scientist interested in virology, cell biology, biomedicine, molecular medicine, human biology, or biochemistry. This project is part of the DZIF-German Center for Infection Research, specifically the thematic translational unit (TTU) Infection of the Immunocompromised Host. The research aims to develop and utilize advanced human organoid and tissue-based cell culture systems as infection models to evaluate antiviral compounds, focusing on opportunistic infections caused by herpes- and polyomaviruses, with a particular emphasis on BK-Polyomavirus and kidney diseases.

The successful candidate will conduct and analyze complex experimental studies using 2D and 3D cell culture models, including human organoids, and apply cutting-edge techniques in virology, cell biology, and molecular biology. The role involves establishing and maintaining collaborative projects within the TTU and with external partners, as well as presenting research findings at internal, national, and international conferences.

This is a fixed-term position for three years, with employment at 65% of full-time weekly working hours, in accordance with WissZeitVG. The position offers structured doctoral training through the Leibniz Center for Infection Graduate School and UKE graduate programs, attractive compensation according to TVöD/VKA, and a comprehensive onboarding process. Additional benefits include extensive training opportunities, travel subsidies, family-friendly policies, health and wellness programs, and a variety of dining options on campus.

Applicants must have a completed Master of Science degree in a relevant life science field and demonstrate hands-on experience or strong interest in cell culture models, organoids, confocal microscopy, high throughput sequencing, and bioinformatics. Strong communication skills and proficiency in English are required. Employment is contingent upon proof of immunization or immunity against the measles virus, with documentation required prior to starting.

UKE values diversity and equal opportunity, with policies to support women and individuals with disabilities in scientific roles. For scientific inquiries, contact Prof. Dr. Nicole Fischer at [email protected]. Applications should be submitted via the DAAD link provided.
