PhD Studentship: Implementation of the Human Right to Water University of Essex in United Kingdom

This fully funded PhD studentship at the University of Essex offers a unique opportunity for individuals from underrepresented groups to pursue advanced research on the implementation of the human right to water. The position is part of the ‘Sustainable Transitions – Leverhulme Doctoral Training Programme’ and includes a fully funded master’s degree (such as LLM Law, Environment and Sustainability or LLM Public International Law) followed by an interdisciplinary PhD. The research will focus on the practical implementation of the human right to water in developing countries, analyzing national law and governance systems, and exploring ways to improve their effectiveness. The project encourages applicants to consider the right to water in the context of competing priorities and governance challenges, particularly in regions where water supply is under stress.

The programme is interdisciplinary, combining legal analysis with governance studies, and is designed to equip scholars with robust research skills through the Sustainable Transitions training programme. This includes initial and ongoing training in interdisciplinary research methods, as well as opportunities to audit relevant courses. All doctoral scholars benefit from Proficio, which provides £2,500 for training courses, and Sustainable Transitions scholars receive an additional £10,000 research allowance for supplies, equipment, and fieldwork. Scholars will also join the Centre for Environment and Society, gaining access to events and networking opportunities.

Eligibility is limited to UK domiciled applicants who do not already hold a Master’s degree from the University of Essex, are from a low-income background (evidenced by maintenance or Special Support loans), and/or belong to specified underrepresented ethnic groups. A background in law or international law is required, but prior experience in international development or environmental governance is not necessary, as training will be provided. The project area is broadly defined, allowing applicants to develop their own research proposal, which will be refined in consultation with the supervisory team.
