About this position

[Fully funded master’s degree followed by a fully funded PhD, plus £20,780 stipend, £2,500 for training courses, and £10,000 for research and additional training.]

This fully funded PhD studentship at the University of Essex offers a unique opportunity for individuals from underrepresented groups to pursue both a master’s and a PhD under the ‘Sustainable Transitions – Leverhulme Doctoral Training Programme.’ The research will focus on the critical interface between legal and economic interventions for effective climate adaptation strategies, addressing urgent global challenges such as storms, flooding, sea-level rise, desertification, drought, and crop failure. The project aims to analyze the gaps in current legal frameworks, particularly in areas of financing, investment, and infrastructure development, and to propose practical solutions for climate change adaptation and mitigation.

The studentship is interdisciplinary, combining legal analysis with economic, financial, and governance strategies. Candidates will explore how legal frameworks can support and enhance economic investments and adaptation mechanisms, contributing to the development of effective policy and law in the climate adaptation space. The program provides comprehensive training in interdisciplinary research methods, secondary discipline training, and ongoing professional development. Scholars will also have access to the University of Essex’s ‘Centre for Environment and Society’ for networking and events.

Funding includes a fully funded master’s degree, a fully funded PhD, a stipend of £20,780, £2,500 for training courses, and £10,000 for research and additional training. Applicants must be UK domiciled, not already hold a master’s degree, and be from a low-income background and/or an underrepresented ethnic group. A background in law is required, but no prior training in economics or related fields is necessary as relevant training will be provided. The project area is broadly defined, allowing candidates to develop their own research proposal in consultation with the supervisory team.

The application deadline is 13 April 2026. Interested candidates should apply through the University of Essex postgraduate research portal and ensure they meet all eligibility criteria. This is an excellent opportunity for those passionate about climate adaptation, law, and policy to contribute to impactful research in a supportive and interdisciplinary environment.
