About this position

Ghent University, a leading European institution, is seeking a Post-doctoral Assistant to strengthen its Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences in the field of Lifelong Learning. The faculty is committed to fostering a learning organization and supporting academic excellence in education, research, and societal service. This two-year, full-time postdoctoral position is one of six appointments aimed at consolidating key disciplines during a period of strategic transition. The successful candidate will focus on lifelong learning, a field that examines how individuals continue to grow and learn throughout life in formal, non-formal, and informal contexts. Research topics may include professional learning, the relationship between formal and informal learning, support for vulnerable groups, fostering agency and inclusion, and adapting learning environments to diverse needs. At least 70% of the role is dedicated to academic research, with additional responsibilities in teaching at the Bachelor’s or Master’s level, counseling Master’s and doctoral students, and contributing to departmental services such as exam invigilation and outreach activities. Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in Educational Sciences, Social Work, or a closely related humanities discipline, with proven research experience in lifelong learning. Strong organizational, social, and communication skills, as well as fluency in Dutch and English, are required. Experience in project acquisition and coordination is advantageous. The appointment offers a competitive salary (scale AAP5) and a comprehensive benefits package, including paid leave, training opportunities, and eco-friendly incentives. Applications must be submitted online by November 4, 2025, and include a CV, publication list, cover letter, diploma transcript, and, if applicable, a certificate of equivalence for non-EU degrees. For further information, candidates may contact Professor Ruben Vanderlinde. This position provides a unique opportunity to contribute to the future of lifelong learning research and education at Ghent University.
