The successful candidate will join the Division of Signal Processing and Biomedical Engineering within the Department of Electrical Engineering, contributing to innovative research in cancer therapy and biomedical device development. The Biomedical Electromagnetic group is renowned for advancing medical diagnostics and treatment systems, with core activities in signal processing, antenna design, and measurement hardware development. Building clinical prototype systems is a central goal, and the group is the first worldwide to demonstrate precise, safe microwave heating of brain tumors.
The research project centers on hyperthermia therapy, which involves heating tumor tissue to 40–44°C to enhance the effectiveness of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Recent studies have shown that hyperthermia can significantly improve tumor control and patient survival rates. The project aims to develop a biomedical model, study protocol, and a microwave heating device capable of focally heating the brain of large-animal subjects, such as sheep, whose brain vessel networks closely resemble those of humans. This pilot trial will monitor intracranial pressure and vital signs during the heating procedure, using both noninvasive angiographic imaging and invasive pressure measurements to quantify brain expansion and assess safety.
The postdoc will be responsible for designing and constructing the heating device, participating in experimental sessions, analyzing data, and supporting the establishment of study protocols. Additional duties include supervising master’s and PhD students and engaging in undergraduate/master’s teaching. The position is a full-time, temporary employment for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension. Physical presence in Gothenburg is required throughout the employment, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date.
Applicants must have a doctoral degree in biomedical engineering, medical physics, electrical engineering, or related fields, with strong English communication skills. Experience in antenna systems for biomedicine, computational electromagnetics, and programming (Matlab, Python) is essential. Teaching experience and research potential are expected. Preferred qualifications include recent doctoral completion, practical experience with antenna systems and clinical hyperthermia, animal model research, and creative, detail-oriented problem-solving skills.
