About this position

The Experimental Quantum Engineering (EQE) group at ETH Zürich and the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join their cutting-edge research at the interface of quantum optics, quantum information science, and quantum many-body physics. Led by Prof. Dr. Wenchao Xu, the EQE group focuses on developing programmable quantum systems based on neutral atoms and Rydberg interactions, advancing both fundamental quantum science and next-generation quantum technologies.

Current research in the group addresses key challenges in quantum science by building and exploiting hybrid quantum systems composed of individually controlled atoms and atomic ensembles. Major directions include scalable architectures for fault-tolerant quantum information processing, strong atom–light interfaces for quantum interconnects and modular quantum systems, and investigations of non-equilibrium quantum many-body dynamics in programmable atom arrays.

The postdoctoral project centers on a new experimental platform utilizing dual-type tweezer atom arrays. The aim is to demonstrate unique advantages in reconfigurable local quantum control, rapid non-demolition state detection of single- and multi-qubit states, and novel quantum dynamics phenomena arising from measurement interplay. These capabilities open new routes toward fault-tolerant quantum computation and frontier exploration in quantum information dynamics.

The successful candidate will design, build, and operate state-of-the-art neutral-atom experiments, demonstrate novel quantum control and measurement protocols, lead research projects, mentor students, and collaborate with researchers at ETH Zürich, PSI, and international partners. The position offers a highly creative and collaborative research environment, freedom to develop independent research directions, access to world-class infrastructure, and opportunities for interdisciplinary and international collaborations.

Applicants must hold a PhD in physics or a related field, with a strong background in experimental AMO physics or quantum optics. Experience with cold atoms, optical tweezers, lasers, or quantum control techniques is highly desirable. Candidates should have a strong interest in neutral-atom quantum technologies and many-body quantum physics, the ability to work independently and collaboratively, and good communication skills in English (German is a plus).
