About this position

The Institute of Geochemistry and Petrology at ETH Zürich is internationally recognized for its research into the fundamental processes that shape our planet. The Volcanology and Magmatic Petrology group, led by Professor Olivier Bachmann, is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to advance research in magmatic and volcanic systems. This opportunity is ideal for an early-career scientist eager to develop an independent research program in magmatic petrology, volcanology, and geochronology.

The successful candidate will be expected to lead research projects, publish in high-impact journals, present at international conferences, and contribute to teaching BSc and MSc courses in petrology and volcanology. The position offers access to state-of-the-art microanalytical facilities (EPMA, LA-ICP-MS, TIMS), geochronology laboratories, and computing clusters, providing an excellent environment for innovative research.

Applicants should hold a recent PhD in Earth Sciences, with specialization in igneous petrology, volcanology, or geochemistry. Required qualifications include strong analytical skills with in-situ techniques, experience in field work, geochronology (U-Pb, Ar-Ar), and/or numerical modelling of igneous processes. Excellent English communication skills are essential, and German language proficiency is advantageous.

ETH Zürich values diversity, sustainability, and equality of opportunity, fostering an inclusive culture where all staff and students can thrive. The university is renowned for its outstanding education, cutting-edge research, and global impact, with over 30,000 people from more than 120 countries.

To apply, candidates must submit their application online, including a CV, motivation statement, research proposal, and contact information for two academic referees. Applications sent via email or postal services will not be considered. For further information, applicants may contact Professor Olivier Bachmann ([email protected]) with questions about the position, but not for application submission.

This postdoctoral position is designed to launch the career of an exceptional scientist, offering both research and teaching opportunities within a vibrant academic community at ETH Zürich.
