About this position
The University of Barcelona is offering a 5-month postdoctoral position in the multidisciplinary research group 'Modulation of neuronal circuitry in brain disorders,' led by Associate Professor Dr. Mercè Masana at the Institute of Neuroscience, Department of Biomedical Sciences. This project integrates photonics, neuroscience, molecular biology, and advanced imaging techniques to investigate neuron-astrocyte communication and its impact on brain network dynamics, with a particular focus on Huntington’s Disease.
The successful candidate will employ state-of-the-art optical tools, including in vitro calcium imaging, in vivo fiber photometry, and optogenetics (light-activated phytochromes), alongside behavioral and fMRI measurements in mouse models. The research aims to elucidate how phytochrome stimulation in neurons or astrocytes modulates neuronal network activity and translates to functional changes in behavior and brain activity.
Applicants should possess a PhD or equivalent in Neuroscience, Biomedicine, or related disciplines, with demonstrated expertise in mouse models, primary neuronal cultures, biochemical analysis (immunohistochemistry, western blot), and MRI. Essential skills include experience with in vitro cell cultures, calcium imaging, rodent experimental research, stereotaxic surgery, histology, molecular biology, and proficiency in fiber photometry and MRI. The role requires strong communication skills, teamwork, and fluency in English, Catalan, and Spanish. FELASA B certification or equivalent is preferred, and candidates should be eager to collaborate with international photonics and bioengineering researchers.
The position offers a full-time contract (37.5 hours/week) for 5 months, with a gross annual salary of €12,500 (€2,500/month), funded by the European Union / Next Generation EU. Selection is based on CV suitability, relevant experience, motivation letter, and possession of a PhD in the specific research field. Applicants must submit an application form, full CV, motivation letter, and a document of absence of conflict of interest (DACI) if PRTR funds are involved. Priority is given to candidates with disabilities, in accordance with Spanish law.
The application deadline is January 16, 2026. The official start date is estimated as February 1, 2026, but may vary depending on administrative processing. The selected candidate must accept the job offer within three working days of notification. For further details and to apply, visit the University of Barcelona’s online portal.
