About this position
The University of Oulu, a leading multidisciplinary research institution in Finland, is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher in Hydrologic Data Assimilation within the Faculty of Water, Energy, and Environmental Engineering (WE3). The position is embedded in the Digital Waters (DIWA) Flagship research area, which focuses on innovative digital solutions for water management, environmental monitoring, and hydrological modelling. The research unit comprises over 120 members across five groups, with expertise spanning hydrological modelling, cold climate hydrology, groundwater research, water quality, and water management. The DIWA Flagship connects experts in ICT technologies and digital applications for water, land, and environmental systems, offering a unique infrastructure and international collaboration opportunities.
The successful candidate will contribute to the development of a digital twin platform for water management systems, integrating monitoring, modelling, and data management. Responsibilities include advancing data assimilation methods, combining process-based models with AI and machine learning, and developing scalable, operational systems for environmental forecasting. The role involves collaboration with international and national research partners, project management, and optional teaching and supervision of graduate students. The research aims to create models for detection, prediction, prescription, and proactive maintenance, and to expand digital twin services for technical pilots and what-if analyses.
Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in geosciences, earth science, engineering, or a related field, completed within the last 10 years and by the application deadline. Essential skills include independent scientific work, teaching ability, proficiency in scientific programming (Python), big data management, OGC standards, algorithm development, and fluency in English. Experience with high-performance computing, parallel and distributed systems, large dataset handling, data integration, operational scientific software, version control, workflow automation, containerization, testing, continuous integration, and deployment in HPC/cloud environments is highly valued. International experience and networking skills are also appreciated.
The position is fixed-term for three years, starting May 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. The starting gross salary ranges from 3800 to 4300 € per month, with additional wellness benefits, a Buddy Programme, Spouse Network, and HR Excellence in Research label. The University of Oulu offers a supportive and flexible work environment, professional development opportunities, and access to a vibrant research community. Finland is renowned for its high quality of life, safety, excellent education system, and competitive economy.
