About this position

The University of Jyväskylä invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position in Nanoscience and Quantum Materials, based in the Synthetic Quantum Materials Group within the Department of Physics. This role offers a unique opportunity to conduct cutting-edge experimental research on nanostructured quantum materials, including topological systems, atomically thin 2D materials, and engineered atomic-scale structures exhibiting emergent electronic and magnetic phenomena. The research will focus on the controlled fabrication, clean assembly, and atomic-scale characterization of van der Waals heterostructures, utilizing advanced cryogenic Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) platforms to investigate 2D materials and graphene-based devices.

Instrumentation available includes a 1 K STM operating under external magnetic fields up to 8 T, and a 4 K STM integrated with optical spectroscopy, enabling STM-induced luminescence (STML) and tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) with angstrom-scale spatial resolution. The successful candidate will conduct fundamental experimental research, fabricate and assemble two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures using controlled transfer techniques, perform structural and electronic characterization, carry out ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) cryogenic STM measurements, operate and maintain state-of-the-art scanning probe microscopy systems, analyze and interpret experimental data, publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals, and present results at international conferences. Active contribution to a collaborative and high-performance research environment is expected.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Condensed Matter Physics, Materials Science, or a closely related field, completed before the starting date. Required qualifications include hands-on experience in the fabrication and characterization of two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures, practical experience with 2D material transfer techniques and cleanroom-based microfabrication processes, and preferably experience in low-temperature STM measurements. A strong record of productive research, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively are essential. The position begins on May 4, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter, and lasts for 12 months with the possibility of extension up to 3 years. A six-month trial period applies.

The University of Jyväskylä offers an initial salary range of approximately 3600-4200 €/month (gross income), determined by the university salary system for teaching and research staff.
