About this position
The Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung, a member of the Leibniz Association, is offering a postdoctoral position in molecular ecology with a focus on bryophytes at the Senckenberg Institute for Plant Form and Function (SIP) in Jena, Germany. The research group Bryophyte Ecology & Evolution investigates ecological and evolutionary questions related to plant biodiversity and adaptation, specifically focusing on bryophytes. The group utilizes fieldwork, controlled experiments, and the renowned Herbarium Haussknecht to explore molecular and morphological variation and environmental change across time and space.
The successful candidate will employ population genetics, genomics, and transcriptomics, combined with environmental and trait data, to study microhabitat adaptation and its role in speciation and hybridization among bryophytes. Responsibilities include data collection in field, herbarium, and laboratory settings (including DNA/RNA sequencing), bioinformatic and statistical analysis, interpretation and publication of research findings, presentation at conferences, and data curation. There is also the opportunity to develop independent, third-party funded research projects.
Applicants must have a PhD (or be close to completion) in Biology or a related field with a molecular ecology focus. Essential skills include ecological-evolutionary genomics, transcriptomics, genetics, plant systematics, molecular laboratory techniques (DNA/RNA isolation, PCR, NGS-sequencing), and proficiency in bioinformatics/statistics using bash, R, or Python. Excellent English communication skills, organizational ability, reliability, and a collaborative attitude are required. Experience with bryophytes, funding acquisition, and German language skills are advantageous.
The position is full-time (with part-time options), for 36 months with possible extension, and is remunerated according to the German Länder collective agreement TV-L E13. Benefits include annual special payment, vacation entitlement, company pension plan, flexible working hours, mobile working options, and support for family care. The Senckenberg Society values diversity and inclusivity, and encourages applications from all qualified candidates.
To apply, send a single PDF containing your motivation letter, CV, research interests (max two pages), certificates, publication list, and recommendation letters (if available) to [email protected] by March 29, 2026. For questions, contact Prof. Dr. Julia Bechteler at [email protected]. More information about the institution and privacy policy can be found at senckenberg.de and privacy policy. The selection process begins after the deadline.
