About this position
The Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology (Leibniz-HKI) is offering a Postdoctoral Researcher Position in Metagenomics within the Microbiome Dynamics (MBD) department. This internationally renowned institute investigates the pathobiology of microorganisms and develops new natural product-based compounds for treating infectious diseases. The MBD department leverages computational methods to advance personalized microbiome-based strategies for disease detection, monitoring, treatment, and prevention, collaborating on multiple EU- and BMBF-funded consortia such as MiCCrobioTAckle, PerMICCion, FOODGUARD, NUTRIMMUNE, and the Cluster of Excellence 'Balance of the Microverse'.
The successful candidate will focus on computational integration of multi-omics datasets from microbial communities and hosts, aiming to uncover the systemic impact of gut bacteria on human physiology. Research will span the interface of gut microbiome, diet, and immune system, investigating roles in diseases including cancer, metabolic disorders, aging, and infections. The position offers collaboration with leading scientists in a dynamic, interdisciplinary, and international environment, supported by state-of-the-art computational resources and a collegial, inclusive atmosphere.
Applicants must have a PhD in computational biology, bioinformatics, systems biology, bioengineering, chemical engineering, or a related discipline. Essential skills include experience in metagenomics, metabolomics, or other high-throughput biological data analysis, statistical methods in biological systems, and programming (Python, Perl, C++, R). Strong collaborative skills and a passion for interdisciplinary research are required. The group, led by Prof. Gianni Panagiotou, consists of 15–20 members at various seniority levels.
Salary is paid according to German TV-L (salary agreement for public service employees). Leibniz-HKI is an equal opportunity employer, committed to diversity and inclusion, and encourages applications from underrepresented groups. Applications should be submitted in English and include a cover letter, CV with publication list, research experience statement, certificate of study/transcript of records, and addresses of two referees via the Leibniz-HKI online application system. The deadline is April 30, 2026, with applications reviewed on a rolling basis.
