The Division of Nuclear Power Safety (NPS) at KTH Royal Institute of Technology is seeking two motivated postdoctoral researchers to advance the field of nuclear safety. The research projects focus on (i) in-vessel melt retention (IVMR) in small modular reactors (SMR) of the pressurized water reactor (PWR) type, and (ii) melt-coolant interactions and melt spreading phenomena. These projects are supported by the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (Strålsäkerhetsmyndigheten), ensuring a strong link to national and international safety research efforts.
The IVMR research aims to adapt conventional methodologies developed for medium- and high-power PWRs to new SMR designs, with the goal of demonstrating the effectiveness of IVMR strategies in maintaining reactor pressure vessel integrity—a critical safety barrier. The expected outcomes will contribute to improved safety performance in next-generation nuclear reactors.

Eligibility and Requirements: Candidates must hold a doctoral degree (PhD) or equivalent in nuclear engineering, nuclear safety, technical mechanics, or a closely related discipline, completed within the last three years. Extensive experience in reactor thermohydraulics, severe accident research, and safety analysis is required. Skills in computational codes for thermohydraulics and severe accident scenarios, as well as hands-on laboratory experience, are highly valued. Strong communication, teamwork, and independent work abilities are essential. Motivation and commitment to research, as well as experience in teaching and awareness of diversity and equality issues, are considered assets. Proficiency in English or Swedish is required for documentation and communication.
Funding and Employment: The position is a full-time, fixed-term postdoctoral appointment for up to two years, with a monthly salary. Funding is provided by Strålsäkerhetsmyndigheten. Employment is subject to security clearance if required by the university.
