About this position
This three-year PhD position at Aix-Marseille Université offers an exciting opportunity to join the 'Surface Nanostructuring for Energy' group and contribute to cutting-edge research in plasmonics and photophysics. The project focuses on spatially programmed hot-electron generation in plasmonic metasurfaces, addressing key challenges in solar energy harvesting and photocatalysis by engineering metasurfaces with programmable, spatially localized hot-electron activity. The research involves fabricating plasmonic and hybrid nanoantennas using scalable lithographic approaches to tailor absorption and hot-electron generation landscapes. Under polarization-controlled illumination, hot-electron activity will be probed via site-selective photocatalysis, photodetection, and localized photopolymerization.
Collaboration with material scientists at CINaM will enable comparative studies between lithographically fabricated and self-assembled colloidal metasurfaces. The project also includes partnerships with IM2NP and ICR institutes in Marseille for plasmon-assisted photopolymerization and photocurrent measurements. The interdisciplinary and international research environment provides access to state-of-the-art nanofabrication, advanced optical characterization facilities, and computational resources, as well as opportunities for short research stays, training in scientific communication and publishing, and participation in both national and international conferences.
The ideal candidate will have a Master’s degree in physics, applied physics, materials science, nanotechnology, or electrical engineering, with strong expertise in optics, nano-optics, or plasmonics. Hands-on experience in experimental laboratory work, nanofabrication or microfabrication techniques, and proficiency in scientific writing and communication in English are required. Additional skills such as electrical measurements, device characterization, photopolymerization, surface functionalization, and computational approaches (FDTD or FEM) are highly valued. Analytical and critical thinking, motivation, and flexibility are essential soft skills.
The position is fully funded for three years and offers excellent preparation for an academic or industrial research career. The application deadline is April 30, 2026, and the envisaged start date is September 1, 2026. Applicants should submit a CV, transcripts for Bachelor and Master studies, a summary of previous research experience, and two letters of recommendation. Applications can be sent to [email protected] or submitted via the online application portal. The Euraxess Center at Aix-Marseille Université provides support for international candidates regarding visas, accommodation, and other practical matters.
