PhD in Next-Generation Thermoelectric-Integrated Membrane Desalination (Smart Cities, Thermal Engineering)

Applications are invited for a fully funded Joint PhD position under the Asian Smart Cities Research and Innovation Network (ASCRIN), a collaboration between Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani (India) and La Trobe University (Australia). The research project focuses on “Next-Generation Thermoelectric-Integrated Membrane Desalination,” aiming to advance water technology and sustainability in the context of smart cities. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Prof. Harikrishnan A. R (BITS Pilani) and Prof. Avinash Baji (La Trobe University), with research activities spanning both India and Australia. The PhD student will be based at BITS Pilani, India, and will also spend up to one year at La Trobe University, Australia. The project is ideal for candidates with a strong background in thermal engineering, renewable energy, mechanical engineering, or related fields. The research will involve the development and integration of thermoelectric materials with membrane desalination systems, contributing to innovative solutions for water scarcity and sustainable urban development. Funding: The position is fully funded. The fellowship at BITS Pilani is ₹37,000–₹42,000 per month, and at La Trobe University, it is AUD 35,000 per year (up to 1 year). Additional benefits include a one-time travel support of AUD 2,000 and health insurance (OSHC) during the stay in Australia. Eligibility: Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in a relevant field, preferably in Thermal Engineering, Renewable Energy, or related areas. A strong academic record and research interest in desalination, thermoelectric systems, or smart cities is preferred. Application Deadline: 24 November 2025. How to Apply: Interested candidates should fill out the Google Form provided in the announcement. For further information, contact Prof. Harikrishnan A. R (ar.harikrishnan@pilani.bits-pilani.ac.in) or Prof. Avinash Baji (A.Baji@latrobe.edu.au). This opportunity is ideal for motivated students seeking to contribute to cutting-edge research in water technology, sustainability, and smart city development, with the added benefit of international research experience.
