Postdoctoral Research Positions in Machine Learning, AI, and Manufacturing Applications
Two postdoctoral research positions are available in the research group led by Associate Professor Chenhui Shao at the University of Michigan, Department of Mechanical Engineering. These positions offer exciting opportunities for researchers to conduct cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research that bridges fundamental machine learning research with high-impact, real-world manufacturing applications. An immediate start date is possible.
Research areas include generative AI (GenAI), large language models (LLMs), vision-language models (VLMs), computer vision, multimodal learning, and generalizable, explainable, and robust machine learning. Applications span robotics, additive manufacturing, welding, electric vehicle battery health management, and quality control. Researchers will also have opportunities to participate in collaborative projects with General Motors.
Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Data Science, Statistics, or a closely related field. Strong research experience in machine learning, computer vision, GenAI, and LLMs/VLMs is desirable. Experience with real-world manufacturing data and interdisciplinary research teams is an advantage.
The research group is an interdisciplinary team focused on advancing the intelligence, quality, and efficiency of manufacturing. Alumni have gone on to successful careers in academia and industry, with job offers from leading companies such as Meta, OpenAI, Google, KLA, Intel, Apple, and others.
