Research Fellow in Contentious Politics, Political Violence, and Autocratic Politics

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin is offering a research fellow position (m/f/d) in the field of contentious politics, political violence, and autocratic politics. This opportunity is based in the Department of Social Sciences and is designed for candidates interested in pursuing a PhD dissertation focused on these critical areas of political research. The position is part-time (2/3 employment) and is limited to a maximum of six years, in accordance with the WissZeitVG and the E 13 TV-L HU salary scale. As a research fellow, you will contribute to both teaching and research activities within the department, while also working towards your personal scientific qualification through a doctoral project. The research environment is dynamic and interdisciplinary, with a strong emphasis on empirical methods and the study of political conflict, violence, and autocratic regimes. Applicants should hold a completed scientific university education in social sciences, economics, political science, or sociology, with above average academic accomplishments. The ideal candidate will have a clear interest in developing a doctoral project related to autocratic politics, conflict, or political violence. Strong quantitative skills are essential, particularly in statistics and methods of causal inference. Proficiency in coding, preferably in R, is highly valued, though candidates willing to acquire these skills are also encouraged to apply. Fluency in scientific English (minimum B2 level) is required, and experience with GIS is considered an advantage. The department values knowledge transfer abilities, social skills, and teamwork. The application process requires submission of a cover letter, CV, transcripts, and a PhD exposé (maximum two pages, including a concrete research question). Applications should reference job ID AN/436/25 and be sent to Prof. Dr. Felix Haass at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, preferably as a single PDF file via email to [email protected]. The university is committed to increasing the proportion of women in research and teaching, and encourages applications from qualified female scholars, individuals with disabilities, and those with an immigration history. Funding for the position is provided through the university, with employment on the E 13 TV-L HU scale and a contract limited to six years. The application deadline is January 9, 2026, and the position is expected to start on February 15, 2026. For further details on data processing and legal information, please consult the university’s website. This is an excellent opportunity for early-career researchers seeking to advance their expertise in contentious politics, political violence, and autocratic politics within a leading German research institution.
