PhD in Analytical Chemistry: Advanced Methods for Complex Sample Analysis Using GCxGC-MS

This fully funded PhD opportunity at the University of Southampton focuses on developing advanced analytical methods for complex sample analysis using state-of-the-art gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GCxGC-MS) instrumentation. The project is a collaboration with LECO Instruments UK Ltd and is supervised by Professor Geraint Morgan, Dr Julie Herniman, and Dr Celia Lourenco, who collectively bring decades of expertise in analytical chemistry and instrumentation development. The research addresses the limitations of traditional analytical methods when faced with complex samples, such as those found in distilled spirits, food, automotive, environmental, and life sciences sectors. By leveraging world-leading GCxGC-MS technology, the project aims to resolve, identify, and quantify a greater number of volatile organic compounds, providing deeper insights into sample composition and addressing challenges across multiple industries. As a PhD student, you will develop novel assays and analytical workflows, building on previous work in gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS), comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC×GC-MS), liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS), supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC), and selected ion flow tube–mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS). You will gain hands-on experience with advanced instrumentation, including the LECO Pegasus BT HRT+, LECO Pegasus BT (LN2), and the LECO Pegasus BTX- Paradigm Shift 2D GC-MS, as well as access to a range of other detector systems. The project will provide comprehensive training in both theoretical and practical aspects of chromatography, mass spectrometry, and analytical chemistry. You will acquire skills in assay development and optimisation, diverse sample collection methods, method optimisation, and data analysis. The University of Southampton offers a supportive research environment, including a dedicated postgraduate research development hub, group meetings, seminars, and opportunities to present at national and international conferences. Eligibility requires a UK 2:1 honours degree or international equivalent in Chemistry or Analytical Sciences. The studentship covers full tuition fees and provides a tax-free stipend, funded by an EPSRC DLA collaborative Award with LECO Instruments UK Ltd. The School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering is committed to equality, diversity, and inclusivity, and welcomes applicants from all backgrounds, including those seeking flexible working patterns or returning from career breaks. The application deadline is March 31, 2026. For further information or to discuss the project, contact Professor Geraint Morgan at [email protected]. General enquiries can be directed to [email protected].
