Polyurethane foam formulations for cryogenic insulation

This postdoctoral position at the Laboratory of Organic Polymer Chemistry (LCPO), University of Bordeaux, focuses on developing fluorine-free polyurethane foams for cryogenic thermal insulation, particularly for applications in liquefied gas tanks. The project addresses the environmental concerns associated with traditional fluorinated blowing agents, aiming to create new foam formulations that maintain essential performance characteristics such as controlled cellular structure, dimensional stability, and suitable thermomechanical properties for extremely low temperatures. The successful candidate will investigate the relationship between the physicochemical properties of alternative blowing agents and foam performance, characterize the resulting materials, and implement formulations under conditions simulating industrial processes like casting, spraying, and high-pressure foaming. The research is conducted in collaboration with major industrial partners (ArianeGroup and Gaztransport & Technigaz) within the framework of the ANR Industrial Chair (SPACE-MAT), offering a dynamic environment at the intersection of academic research and industrial innovation. The postdoctoral researcher will join Team 2 – Biopolymers and Bio-based Polymers, led by Prof. Henri Cramail, and will participate in regular visits to industrial partners in Bordeaux and Paris to ensure close integration between research and application. LCPO is a joint research unit affiliated with CNRS, University of Bordeaux, and Bordeaux INP Aquitaine, with a strong reputation in polymer chemistry and functional materials. The position is full-time, funded by the ANR Industrial Chair, and requires a PhD in Chemistry or Polymer Physical Chemistry, with preferred experience in polyurethane foams and industrial foaming processes. Basic French language skills are expected. Applications are accepted online via the CNRS employment portal until October 16, 2025.
