AMOLF

PhD student Nonlinear molecular spectroscopy of elastic water

This PhD position at AMOLF focuses on the nonlinear molecular spectroscopy of elastic water in hydrogels, a unique class of form-stable, elastic materials composed of a polymer network and a high water content. The project investigates both biological hydrogels, which are formed by protein-polysaccharide chains and contain 90-99% water, and supramolecular hydrogels, which are assembled from small molecular components via hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions, often containing more than 99.9% water. These materials are highly responsive to external stimuli such as temperature, pH, and light, enabling easy control of their visco-elastic properties. Using advanced nonlinear spectroscopic techniques, including femtosecond two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy and polarization-resolved femtosecond infrared spectroscopy, the research aims to elucidate the molecular-scale structure and dynamics of water and polymer networks within these hydrogels. The findings will clarify how the macroscopic viscoelastic and responsive properties of hydrogels are determined by their molecular structure and dynamics. The position is based in the Ultrafast Spectroscopy group led by Prof. Huib J. Bakker, which studies the structural dynamics of complex liquids and solids using state-of-the-art spectroscopic methods. AMOLF is a leading research institute of NWO-I, located at Amsterdam Science Park, and collaborates with academia and industry to advance fundamental research in physics and materials science. The institute offers a vibrant, international work environment with informal communication and support for incoming foreign PhD students, including assistance with housing, visa applications, and compensation for transport and furnishing expenses. The appointment is full-time for four years, with a starting salary of €2,781 gross per month and a comprehensive benefits package. Upon successful completion, the PhD degree will be granted by the University of Amsterdam. AMOLF provides specialized courses for PhD students and is recognized for its commitment to diversity and inclusion, having received the NNV Diversity Award 2022. Applicants must have a Master's degree in Physics or Physical Chemistry, with experience in femtosecond lasers and/or nonlinear spectroscopy considered advantageous. Applications must include all requested documents and a transcript; online screening may be part of the selection process. For further information, contact Prof. Huib J. Bakker at [email protected].
