Doctoral Fellow in Indoor Air Quality and Ventilation Strategies

Ghent University invites applications for a full-time Doctoral Fellow position in the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning, focusing on indoor air quality and the mitigation of particulate matter exposure in residential environments. This research-driven opportunity is ideal for candidates with a strong background in architectural, mechanical, or environmental engineering, and a keen interest in building physics, HVAC systems, and ventilation strategies. The successful candidate will independently investigate the contribution of peak concentrations to total particulate matter exposure in homes. Key responsibilities include designing and conducting measurement campaigns, processing existing measurement data in collaboration with local and international partners, and modeling the effectiveness of demand-controlled ventilation strategies. The research aims to develop optimal solutions for kitchens and bedrooms, ultimately contributing to healthier indoor environments. The final objective is to obtain a doctoral degree. Applicants should possess a Master’s degree (preferably in architectural, mechanical, or environmental engineering) or equivalent, with thorough knowledge of building physics and HVAC. Experience with building energy simulation or multi-zone airflow simulation is required, and prior work in ventilation or air cleaning performance assessment is preferred. Candidates are expected to demonstrate their expertise through relevant publications or reports. The fellowship offers an initial 12-month contract, extendable up to a maximum of 48 months upon positive evaluation. The fellowship amount corresponds to 100% of the net salary of an AAP member, determined by family status and seniority, and is tax-free. Ghent University provides a comprehensive benefits package, including training opportunities, 36 days of annual holiday leave, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers. To apply, submit your CV, diploma, relevant publications or reports, and a motivation letter to [email protected] by May 1, 2026. Late applications will not be considered. For further information, contact Professor Jelle Laverge at [email protected]. Ghent University is committed to equal opportunities and diversity, and encourages all qualified candidates to apply.
