Research Assistant / PhD Position in Biomedical Engineering (EU Researcher)
The Department of Computer Science and Automation at Ilmenau University of Technology, Germany, is offering a Research Assistant / PhD position within the Group of Biomedical Engineering (BMT). This opportunity is part of the BRAINET consortium, which aims to revolutionize deep brain stimulation through spatio-temporal Interference Stimulation (stIS). The project focuses on developing skull-implantable stimulation hubs that form a communication network for precise 3D targeting in the brain, enabling semantic information transfer and synchronization for self-adjusting therapeutic stIS. These hubs utilize novel magneto-electrical transducer stacks powered by external magnetic fields and feature nano-modified, compliant electrodes that only touch the brain surface, minimizing invasiveness.
Network formation will be achieved using multiphysics approaches and ionic in-body communication, supported by dedicated microelectronic hardware. The project includes preclinical in-vitro and in-vivo testing to validate the devices and methods, contributing to the advancement of Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) technology. As a PhD researcher, you will be responsible for developing advanced current flow models (digital twins), performing comprehensive uncertainty analyses related to electrical conductivity and tissue geometry, and devising optimization strategies for the placement of new interference stimulation devices.
Applicants should hold a Master's degree in Engineering, preferably in electrical or biomedical engineering, and possess skills in numerical field computation, finite and boundary element methods, transcranial electric stimulation, temporal interference stimulation, polynomial chaos analysis, and optimization techniques. Candidates of any nationality are welcome, provided they have not resided or worked in Germany for more than 12 months in the past 36 months and do not already hold a doctoral degree. The position is full-time and not suitable for part-time employment.
The monthly gross salary is €4,768.12, which includes living and mobility allowances, with additional family and special needs allowances available for eligible candidates according to MSCA guidelines. The university offers 30 days of vacation per year, extra days off on 24 and 31 December, a family-friendly and flexible working model, individual training opportunities, and extensive health and sports programs. Ilmenau University of Technology is recognized for its commitment to gender equality and a respectful, interdisciplinary academic environment.
Applications must be submitted online via the university's job portal by March 1, 2026. The selection process includes a pre-evaluation based on CV, experience, and skills, followed by interviews scheduled for calendar weeks 10 and 14 of 2026.
