Postdoctoral Researcher in Land Carbon Fluxes, Physical Geography, and Climate Policy
A postdoctoral researcher position is available at the Chair for Physical Geography and Land Use Systems, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU), under the supervision of Prof. Julia Pongratz. The research focuses on reconciling land carbon fluxes between global models and national greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories, contributing to the Global Carbon Budget and IPCC assessments. The successful candidate will work at the intersection of science and policy, aiming to improve the consistency of emission estimates and support progress under the Paris Agreement.
The position includes a unique opportunity to spend up to two years as a Visiting Scientist at the Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Ispra, Italy, fostering collaboration between leading European research institutions. The research will involve advanced ecosystem modelling, data analysis, and engagement with national GHG inventory methodologies. Applicants should have a PhD in geography, environmental science, physics, or a related field, with strong programming skills and experience in ecosystem modelling or national inventories considered an asset.
The appointment is full-time (100%) for up to three years, with remuneration according to the TV-L E13 pay scale. The position is based in Munich, Germany, with significant time at JRC in Italy. The application deadline is March 16, 2026, and the anticipated start date is May 2026 or soon thereafter. Interested candidates should submit their application to [email protected], referencing 'JRC-2026LMU' in the subject line. For more information, consult the official LMU job portal.
Key research areas include land carbon fluxes, greenhouse gas inventories, physical geography, climate policy, and ecosystem modelling. This role is ideal for researchers interested in the science–policy interface and contributing to international climate research efforts.
