The Dresden Leibniz Graduate School (DLGS) in Sustainability Sciences is a joint interdisciplinary doctoral programme offered by the Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (IOER) and Dresden University of Technology (TUD). The programme is designed for PhD candidates interested in the sustainable development and transformation of cities and regions, addressing the global human-ecological crisis through interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research. DLGS fellows undertake a three-year, full-time doctoral programme, with the opportunity to extend their studies. The curriculum includes compulsory and elective courses covering philosophy of science, qualitative and quantitative methodologies, spatial sustainability science, transformative leadership, and technical skills in research, writing, and publishing. Fellows also have access to TUD's Graduate Academy and German language courses for international students. Scientific support is provided through Supervisory Board meetings and tailored guidance, with additional funding for fieldwork and conference participation. The programme fosters an international environment, with diverse PhD peers, staff, and supervisors, and encourages participation in international conferences. DLGS fellows receive a scholarship of 1,515 EUR per month for three years, plus travel and research expenses. Applicants must have a Master’s degree obtained within the last three years, with a grade of 'good' or better, and submit a research proposal aligned with IOER research areas. English proficiency is required, and German proficiency at C1 level is necessary for transdisciplinary research. Applications are accepted online, with separate forms for annual topic and open topic submissions. The programme is based in Dresden, a vibrant city known for its cultural and natural attractions, and offers comprehensive support for international students, including help with accommodation and registration. DLGS aims to equip future researchers with the skills and knowledge to contribute to just urban and regional transformations within a safe ecological operating space.
