International Call to Hire a PhD Researcher in Materials Engineering (LEAF Project)

The CENIMAT|i3N labs at Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa (FCT-NOVA) are seeking to hire a PhD-level researcher for the LEAF project, funded by Horizon Europe. This international call (#NOVAID271) is for a full-time, unfixed term employment contract, with a forecasted duration of 12 months, not to exceed the project duration. The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team working on the development of sustainable inks based on metal oxide nanostructures and two-dimensional (2D) materials, optimizing printing processes, and fabricating sensors for humidity detection and visible light response using flexography and screen printing techniques. The role includes device and materials characterization, with techniques such as UV-Vis-NIR, FTIR, XRD, SEM, AFM, and Profilometer. The position is based at the CENIMAT|i3N labs, located on the Caparica campus of Universidade Nova de Lisboa, with potential travel within Portugal or abroad as required by project activities. The researcher will be expected to devote their professional activity exclusively to NOVA.id.FCT. The contract is governed by the Portuguese Labour Code and is indexed to remuneration level 41 of the Single Remuneration Table (TRU), with a monthly gross salary of €2,847.25. Applicants must hold a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, Physics, Micro and Nanotechnology Engineering, Engineering Physics, or related fields, recognized in Portugal. Required skills include ink formulation, material deposition, device fabrication, thin film deposition by printing techniques, electrical characterization of printed electronic sensors, and materials characterization. Candidates should be able to work autonomously and in a multidisciplinary, international environment, provide scientific support to university students, and participate in outreach activities. Fluency in Portuguese and English is mandatory. The selection process involves evaluation of scientific and curricular achievements (50%) and professional experience (50%), with a minimum score required for hiring. The jury includes Dr. Emanuel Carlos, Dr. Henrique Almeida, Prof. Joana Pinto, Dr. Adam Kelly, and Prof. Marta Corvo. The final decision will be published on the NOVA.id.FCT website and communicated to all candidates by email. Applications must be submitted by email to [email protected] between 09/03/2026 and 20/03/2026, with a single PDF file containing a complete CV, motivation letter, and doctoral certificate in Portuguese or English. NOVA.id.FCT promotes a non-discrimination and equal access policy. For further details, visit the official job description at this link or the position page on Euraxess .
