National Institute for Materials Science

Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Spintronics Devices and Materials (Magnetic Thin Films, Magnetization Dynamics)

The National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) in Tsukuba, Japan, is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join the Magnetic Functional Device Group within the Research Center for Magnetic and Spintronic Materials. The research focuses on developing next-generation magnetic recording technologies with ultra-low power consumption and ultra-high recording density. The core project investigates magnetic thin-film devices, exploring magnetization dynamics induced by spin-transfer torque and spin–orbit torque, and studies related materials such as magnetic and spin Hall materials. Key research areas include spintronics, magnetic thin films, device fabrication, and advanced characterization techniques. The group has state-of-the-art facilities for thin-film growth, microfabrication, and magnetic/transport property evaluation. Recent achievements include experimental advances in spin-torque oscillators and Heusler alloy thin films, as published in leading journals such as Communications Physics and Scientific Reports. The research environment is highly collaborative, involving partnerships with other NIMS groups, external research institutions, and industry. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in materials science, applied physics, or physics, with strong skills in scientific English. Experience in thin-film fabrication (e.g., sputtering), microfabrication (photolithography or electron beam lithography), high-frequency measurements (FMR), or computational materials research is desirable. The position is open to candidates who are motivated to advance the field of magnetic and spintronic materials and devices. The appointment is for one year, renewable up to five years based on performance. The monthly salary ranges from 345,425 to 385,626 yen, with possible increases for experienced candidates. Full health, pension, and employment insurance are provided. The work location is NIMS Sengen-Site, Tsukuba City, Ibaraki, Japan. To apply, send a NIMS-CV with photo, publication list, three selected papers (PDF), a brief research summary, and contact details of two references to Dr. Hirofumi Suto by email. Applications are accepted until the position is filled. For more information, see the official NIMS employment page.
