PhD position in investigating motivators and barriers in consumer acceptance of 3D printing

Delft University of Technology is offering a PhD position focused on advancing consumer acceptance of additive manufacturing (AM) technologies for repair and refurbishment. The successful candidate will join the Responsible Marketing and Consumer Behaviour research group at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering (IDE), working within the NWA-ORC consortium ADD-reAM. The project aims to investigate motivators and barriers in consumer acceptance of 3D printing for repair and refurbishment, and to develop and test interventions to increase adoption. Research will address how AM can facilitate the transition to a circular economy by enabling more sustainable consumer practices. The PhD will use mixed-methods, including qualitative and quantitative consumer research and Research-through-Design (RtD). Applicants should have a Master’s degree in industrial design, marketing, psychology, or a related field, with strong research and analytical skills, and excellent English proficiency. The position is fully funded for four years, with a competitive salary and benefits according to Dutch university standards. The application deadline is 15 November 2025, and the starting date is planned for January 2026. Applications must be submitted online and include a motivation letter, CV with MSc grades, and a reference letter. Supervisors for this position are Prof. Ruth Mugge and Dr. Giulia Granato. The project is part of a larger initiative involving multiple universities and industry partners, offering a collaborative and interdisciplinary research environment.
