PhD Fellowship in AI and Social Inequalities at University of Liverpool

The University of Liverpool is offering a three-year PhD Fellowship focused on the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and social inequalities. Hosted by the Department of Communication and Media and the Digital Media and Society Institute, this opportunity invites candidates to explore how AI systems can either challenge or perpetuate structural social inequalities in digital societies. The research will combine computational social science with critical humanities perspectives, examining the impact of AI across sectors such as welfare, employment, education, media, and justice. The project will address the intersection of digital and AI divides with factors like race, class, and disability, and may include participatory methods to democratise AI development. Methodological innovation is encouraged, including the blending of quantitative, ethnographic, and algorithmic approaches to create tools that improve access to or the design of AI for affected communities. The Fellow will collaborate with civil society organisations, trade unions, and digital rights groups already partnered with the University. The position is based at the University of Liverpool, a leading research institution in the UK. While the announcement does not specify funding details, the fellowship is for three years. Applicants should have a strong background in relevant fields and an interest in interdisciplinary, impactful research. The application deadline is December 1, 2024. For more information, candidates are encouraged to consult the official University of Liverpool application page and contact Prof. Simeon Yates for further details.
