PhD Fellowships in Early Modern Intellectual History, History of Science, and Astronomy at Ghent University

Ghent University, in collaboration with the Centre Leo Apostel at Vrije Universiteit Brussel, is offering two fully funded PhD positions in Early Modern Intellectual History, History of Science, and Astronomy. The research project centers on Govaart Wendelen, a priest-astronomer whose correspondence and notes illuminate a transnational scholarly network in the Habsburg Netherlands and beyond. The project integrates intellectual history, history of science, manuscript studies, and the study of knowledge circulation across political, institutional, and confessional boundaries. Applicants can choose between two research tracks: The Eclipse Project, focusing on Wendelen’s astronomical and chronological work, and The Deluge Project, examining his theological, historical, and antiquarian contributions. Both tracks involve observational practices, manuscript analysis, and the study of scientific and theological networks. The positions offer opportunities for workshops, conferences, and collaborative digital source analysis. Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in History or a related Humanities discipline by the start of the PhD. Required qualifications include interest in early modern sources, passive knowledge of Latin (or willingness to learn), passive knowledge of at least one Romance language, strong English proficiency, and willingness to conduct archival research abroad. Basic Dutch is recommended but not required. The fellowship is full-time for up to 4 years, with a tax-exempt salary based on the A3-AAP scale, and includes benefits such as 36 days annual leave, training, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers.
