Fully Funded PhD Positions in Geomorphology, Remote Sensing, and Landslide Dynamics at Charles University

Charles University’s Faculty of Science in Prague is offering two fully funded PhD positions focused on geomorphology, landscape evolution, remote sensing, and landslide dynamics. The research project, led by Dr. Sumit Das (PI) and co-advised by Dr. Gianvito Scaringi, aims to redefine landslide dynamics by investigating landslide-driven divide migration and carbon sequestration. The positions are embedded in the Coupled Earth Surface Research Group and synergize with the GeoHazards Group at the Institute of Hydrogeology, Engineering Geology, and Applied Geophysics. The interdisciplinary project explores how landslides shape landscapes and influence river systems, with fieldwork opportunities in the Alps and Himalayas. The research will use geotechnical characterization, high-resolution remote sensing, geomorphic analysis, and numerical modeling to understand the geomorphic and fluvial responses to landslide events, especially under changing climate conditions. The project is funded by the Czech Science Foundation and offers a dynamic, international research environment with strong professional development opportunities. Eligibility: Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in Geology, Geomorphology, Physical Geography, Remote Sensing and GIS, Earth Sciences, or a related field. Essential skills include a strong background in landslide processes, fluvial geomorphology, or landscape evolution, proficiency in remote sensing and GIS software, willingness to participate in fieldwork in challenging mountainous terrain, and excellent English communication skills. Experience with scientific programming (Python, MATLAB, R) and geomorphic analysis tools is advantageous. Funding: The positions are fully funded for up to 4 years, including a monthly salary based on a 0.7 FTE research assistant position plus a doctoral scholarship. The project is supported by a prestigious national grant and offers opportunities for international collaboration, fieldwork, and conference participation. Application Process: Applicants must submit a motivation letter (max 2 pages), comprehensive CV, MSc degree certificate or proof of graduation, names and contacts of two referees (one must be the MSc thesis supervisor), and a technical assignment (map and graph panel tasks) to Dr. Sumit Das ([email protected]) with a cc to Dr. Gianvito Scaringi ([email protected]). The application deadline is 20 March 2026, and the program starts in October 2026. For further details, refer to the attached PDF or contact the supervisors directly. Keywords: geomorphology, landslide dynamics, remote sensing, landscape evolution, fluvial geomorphology, geology, physical geography, earth sciences, GIS, climate change.
