PhD Position: Gut Microbiome Metabolism and Molecular Mechanisms Mediating Gut Microbiome-Host Interactions in Birds

A fully funded 3-year PhD position is available in the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland, within the Environmental Physiology Lab led by Associate Professor Suvi Ruuskanen. The successful candidate will join an ERC-funded project investigating the significance of the gut microbiome in thermal adaptation in birds, focusing on both inter- and transgenerational effects. The research aims to uncover the molecular mechanisms mediating host-microbiome interactions, with a particular emphasis on metabolomics and the analysis of bacterial vesicles in avian models, especially Japanese quail. The project leverages a rich collection of existing samples and expects the doctoral researcher to contribute to further sample and data collection, laboratory analyses, data analysis, and manuscript preparation. The research group is international, collaborative, and offers a supportive environment with access to state-of-the-art facilities, including the Konnevesi research station, advanced laboratories, and comprehensive scientific resources. The position includes opportunities for skill development through workshops and conference travel. The doctoral researcher will be supervised by Associate Prof. Suvi Ruuskanen, Dr. Lisandrina Mari, and Prof. Phill Watts, with additional collaboration with Justus Reunanen (University of Oulu). Applicants should have a strong background in molecular or cellular biology, microbiology, or a related field, with proven laboratory skills and experience in statistics and bioinformatics. A good command of English is required, and candidates must be eligible for postgraduate studies at the University of Jyväskylä. The initial annual salary is approximately 31,000 EUR (gross), with increases as the thesis progresses. The University of Jyväskylä offers a vibrant, inclusive, and international research community, excellent infrastructure, and a high quality of life in the city of Jyväskylä, which is known for its educational and cultural opportunities. The application deadline is December 20, 2025. Applications must be submitted online and include a CV, motivation letter, relevant certificates, and a list of publications (if any). For further information, contact Associate Professor Suvi Ruuskanen at [email protected].
