Photoacoustic imaging for minimally-invasive sperm retrieval procedures

A fully funded PhD studentship is available at King's College London through the MRC Doctoral Training Partnership, focusing on the development and validation of photoacoustic imaging for guiding minimally-invasive sperm retrieval. The project addresses the challenge of non-obstructive azoospermia, aiming to improve outcomes in fertility treatment by using a novel LED-based dual-modal photoacoustic/ultrasound system to visualize blood oxygen saturation, flow, and metabolic rate in testicular tissue. The research is co-supervised by Wenfeng Xia (Reader, School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences) and Tet Yap (Dr, School of Immunology & Microbial Sciences), both at King's College London. The student will gain expertise in imaging technology, optical system design, image processing, and translational research, preparing for a career in biomedical imaging or clinical research. The project includes building and characterizing imaging systems, fabricating tissue-mimicking phantoms, validating imaging sensitivity and resolution, and conducting preclinical and volunteer studies. Funding covers tuition and stipend for four years. Applicants should have a strong interest in interdisciplinary healthcare research and relevant technical skills. The application deadline is December 28, 2024. For more information and to apply, visit the project page or contact the supervisors.
