PhD Position: Sustainable Membranes through Advanced Foaming

This PhD position at the University of Twente is part of the Membrane Surface Science (MSuS) group within the Department of Membrane Science & Technology (MST) and the Molecular Nanofabrication group in the Department of Molecules and Materials. The project centers on the development and characterization of new, sustainable membranes, which are crucial for safe drinking water production and waste stream treatment. Traditional membrane fabrication relies on harmful aprotic solvents, but this research aims to pioneer a solvent-free method using the complexation of charged polyelectrolytes, with water as the only solvent. Advanced foaming techniques will be employed to control membrane porosity and pore size, directly linking material properties to membrane performance. The position is embedded in a larger NWO-VICI project, fostering collaboration with other PhD students and a postdoc focused on related aspects such as advanced functionalities and upscaling. The research environment is highly collaborative, with integration into the MSuS and MnF groups, and offers extensive opportunities for knowledge exchange. The successful candidate will participate in the Twente Graduate School and other graduate education programs, and contribute to teaching by supervising BSc and MSc assignments or assisting in departmental courses. The Membrane Science and Technology department is internationally recognized, with a strong history in membrane research, over 250 PhD graduates, and significant scientific output. The Faculty of Science & Technology at the University of Twente is a leading institution in chemical technology, applied physics, and biomedical technology, with strong industry and research partnerships. The position offers a four-year contract, competitive salary, excellent benefits, and a supportive, family-friendly work environment. Applicants should have a relevant Master’s degree, strong motivation, and affinity for physical chemistry, materials science, and water treatment. Experience with polyelectrolytes and related processes is preferred. English proficiency is required, and the selection process may include a written test and scientific presentation. Applications should be submitted online by 16 November 2025, including a cover letter, CV, transcripts, and references. For further information, contact Prof. Wiebe M. de Vos.

PhD position on: “Functional Membranes through advanced foaming”

The University of Twente invites applications for a PhD position focused on the development of functional membranes through advanced foaming techniques. This research will be conducted within the Membrane Surface Science (MSuS) group, part of the Department of Membrane Science & Technology (MST), and the Advanced Organ Bio-engineering and Therapeutics (AOT) group. The project aims to produce and characterize membranes with enhanced functionalities, such as absorbative or catalytic properties, by incorporating (nano)particles during the production process and utilizing foaming to improve access to these particles. These innovative membranes are relevant for applications including the removal of micropollutants from water and protein-bound toxins in kidney dialysis. This PhD project is part of a larger NWO-VICI initiative, offering a collaborative environment with close interaction among at least two other PhD students and a postdoc. The research team will focus on sustainable membrane production, advanced functionalities, and upscaling of promising membrane technologies. Integration within the MSuS and AOT groups ensures extensive collaboration and knowledge exchange, and the project is embedded in a department with over 50 years of internationally recognized expertise in membrane science. As a PhD candidate, you will have access to further education through the Twente Graduate School and other graduate programs in the Netherlands. You will also contribute to the teaching program by supervising BSc and MSc assignments or assisting in courses. The MST department, known as Twente Membranes, has a strong track record of PhD graduates, scientific publications, and patents. The AOT group focuses on bioengineering, biomaterials, and regenerative medicine, striving to translate innovative technologies from the lab to clinical applications. The Faculty of Science & Technology at the University of Twente is a multidisciplinary hub for research and education in chemical technology, applied physics, biomedical technology, sustainable energy, process technology, materials science, nanotechnology, and technical medicine. The faculty collaborates intensively with industrial partners and researchers both nationally and internationally. Applicants should hold a Master’s degree (preferably with distinction) in a relevant field such as Membrane Science, Materials Science, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physical Chemistry, or Physics. Experience with polyelectrolytes, responsive polymers, and phase separation processes is advantageous. Candidates must demonstrate motivation for fundamental research, strong analytical and communication skills, and proficiency in English. The selection process may include a written test and scientific presentation. The position offers a four-year contract with a gross monthly salary ranging from €3,059 to €3,881, holiday allowance, end-of-year bonus, pension scheme, generous leave, free access to sports facilities, and parental leave. Training and supervision plans will be developed as part of the Twente Graduate School program. To apply, submit your application via the provided link before 2026-03-31, including a cover letter, CV, transcripts, and references.
