Doctoral scholarship holder in process-structure-property relationships for a new class of biobased acrylic coatings

The University of Antwerp invites applications for a full-time doctoral scholarship holder in process-structure-property relationships for a new class of biobased acrylic coatings. As a dynamic and innovative European university, Antwerp offers a stimulating environment for over 20,000 students and 6,000 employees from diverse backgrounds. The Department of Biochemical and Chemical Engineering, within the Faculty of Applied Engineering, is seeking a motivated PhD candidate to join the iPRACS research group and contribute to pioneering research in biobased polymer design. The successful candidate will actively prepare and defend a PhD thesis focused on developing novel functionalization strategies to enhance the performance of biobased acrylic polymers. The research will systematically investigate the relationship between synthesis conditions, macromolecular structure, and material properties, aiming to advance the understanding of process-structure-property relationships in polymer science. The project emphasizes publishing scientific articles and participating in limited teaching and research support tasks within the group. Applicants must hold (or expect to hold by the start date) a Master degree in (Bio)Chemical Engineering (Technology), Chemistry, or a related field. Strong academic performance and alignment with the University’s educational and research vision are essential. Experience with microkinetic modelling or machine learning, particularly in polymer design, as well as modelling macromolecular structures or predicting polymer material properties, is highly valued. Candidates should demonstrate integrity, creativity, cooperation, and a commitment to quality. The position offers a doctoral scholarship for one year, renewable annually up to a maximum of four years, subject to positive evaluation. The monthly scholarship amount is determined by university rates, and additional benefits include ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, and either a bicycle allowance or full reimbursement of public transport commuting costs. Doctoral researchers gain access to a wide range of courses and educational credits through the Antwerp Doctoral School, and will work primarily at campus Groenenborger in a vibrant academic setting. Applications must be submitted online via the University of Antwerp’s job application platform by 9 April 2026 (midnight Brussels time). Required attachments include a motivation letter and academic CV. The selection committee will review applications promptly after the deadline, and candidates will be notified of decisions and next steps. For application form queries, contact [email protected]; for job-specific questions, reach out to Prof. Yoshi Marien ([email protected]). The University of Antwerp is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities, and encourages candidates from all backgrounds to apply. The institution holds the European Commission’s HR Excellence in Research Award and invests in the growth and well-being of its employees.
