Doctoral scholarship holder

University of Antwerp is recruiting a PhD student in Applied Mathematics / Statistics within the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science. The project is centered on statistics and machine learning, with a research focus on causal discovery, including practical challenges such as scalability, mixed-type data, and robustness.

The successful candidate will work in the statistics group at campus Middelheim, publish scientific articles related to the project, and contribute a limited number of teaching and research support tasks in applied mathematics. The position is supervised/announced by Prof. Jakob Raymaekers, Assistant Professor at the University of Antwerp.

Eligibility highlights: a Master degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, or equivalent; excellent study results; strong programming skills in R and/or Python; and research/teaching qualities aligned with the university’s policies. Dutch is a plus but not required.

Funding: this is a doctoral scholarship position, initially for one year and renewable annually after positive evaluation up to four years. The scholarship includes a monthly stipend according to the university’s doctoral scholarship rates, plus ecocheques, internet-connectivity allowance, and either a bicycle allowance or full public-transport reimbursement.
