About this position
The Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) is offering a fully funded PhD scholarship focused on business ecosystem modelling for smart charging and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technologies. This opportunity is hosted by the Faculty of Engineering, Department of Elektrotechniek en energietechniek, within the renowned MOBI - Electromobility Research Centre. The successful candidate will develop innovative business ecosystem models for smart charging and V2G, analyze business opportunities and market effects of large-scale V2G adoption, and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team studying technical and economic aspects of electromobility. The position includes authoring scientific papers, presenting at international conferences, and completing a PhD dissertation within four years.
Applicants should hold a Master's degree in Economics, Engineering, or Applied Mathematics, and demonstrate a strong interest in sustainable energy systems. Essential skills include basic modelling and proficiency in programming languages such as Python; experience in system dynamics modelling is advantageous. Candidates must have a solid mathematical background, strong interest in economics, and excellent communication skills in English. The ability to work both independently and collaboratively is important, and willingness to attend meetings and conferences abroad is expected. Basic Dutch language skills are a plus. Non-EEA nationals must meet VUB permit and residence requirements.
The scholarship is initially offered for 12 months, with the possibility of extension up to 48 months based on positive evaluation of PhD progress. The grant is linked to government salary scales and includes a comprehensive benefits package: telework allowance, hospitalisation insurance, full reimbursement for public transport commuting, affordable campus meals, sports and exercise facilities, discounts via Benefits@Work, nursery and holiday camp discounts, and extensive opportunities for professional development. The VUB is committed to diversity, inclusion, and work-life balance, providing an open and supportive environment for all staff and students.
Applications must be submitted online by 15 January 2026 via the VUB jobs portal. Required documents include a CV, motivation letter, and diploma (not required for VUB alumni). The selection process involves an initial review of application materials followed by a job interview. For questions about the position, contact Prof. Dr. Cedric De Cauwer at [email protected].
