The University of Sydney is offering a prestigious PhD scholarship for research in immunisation and disease surveillance, with a focus on measles and vaccine-preventable diseases in Southeast Asia, particularly Lao PDR and the Philippines. This opportunity is funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and the Faculty of Medicine and Health. The project aims to establish a collaborative surveillance platform to enhance measles control and epidemic preparedness in the region, in line with the World Health Organization's goal to eliminate measles by 2030.

Successful candidates will join a multidisciplinary team of epidemiologists, clinicians, economists, and infectious disease experts from Australia, Lao PDR, and the Philippines. The research will involve epidemiological and mixed-method studies to evaluate existing surveillance systems, optimize laboratory surveillance using new diagnostic tests, and design frameworks for public health response. The project is co-designed with policymakers and aims to strengthen health emergency preparedness and response plans in Southeast Asia.

The scholarship provides a stipend of $41,753 per annum for up to 3 years, with a possible 3-month extension. Applicants must be willing to travel and spend time in Southeast Asia for project meetings and data collection. Eligibility requires an unconditional offer or current full-time enrollment in a PhD within the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney. Selection is based on academic merit, CV, and academic referees, with shortlisted candidates attending an interview. Progression depends on annual evaluations.
