The University of Auckland is offering a fully funded PhD scholarship in Neurological Chemical Biology, focusing on the project “Deconvoluting novel pericyte neuroinflammation targets from unbiased covalent fragment screens.” This research aims to characterise covalent fragment drug action using genetic and pharmacological approaches, and to identify covalent fragment binding sites to support new in silico drug discovery campaigns. The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team at the Centre for Brain Research, the Department of Pharmacology, and the Auckland Cancer Society Research Centre, contributing to innovative work in neuroscience, chemical biology, and pharmacology.

This scholarship is funded through an inaugural Neurological Foundation Programme Grant and offers a unique opportunity to work alongside leading scientists, clinicians, and innovators at internationally recognised research centres. The Centre for Brain Research fosters collaboration between neuroscientists, clinicians, and the community to address complex challenges in brain health, including neurodegenerative diseases and cognitive development. The Auckland Cancer Society Research Centre is renowned for its translational drug discovery research, helping to develop the next generation of therapies and diagnostics.

Eligibility criteria include a strong academic record with a relevant Honours or Master’s degree in chemical biology, medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, molecular modelling, or neuroscience. Candidates should demonstrate interest and/or experience in neuroscience, medicinal chemistry, chemical biology, proteomics, gene editing, structural biology, molecular modelling, or systems biology. Excellent communication and analytical skills are essential. Applicants must be eligible to enrol as a PhD candidate at the University of Auckland. International applicants are welcome, though a right to live and study in New Zealand is advantageous.

The scholarship provides full funding for three years of full-time study, including a stipend of $36,000 NZD per annum and tuition fees of $7,656 NZD per annum (excluding student service fees and international insurance). Additional support for conference travel is available.
