Description

The Research Training Group CorMic at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) is inviting applications for 13 PhD positions in an interdisciplinary program focused on advanced microscopy, materials science, and AI/ML. The program unites expertise in materials development, data-driven science, and cutting-edge microscopy to address global challenges in climate, energy, and sustainability. Doctoral researchers will work at the interface of physics, chemistry, materials science, and computational engineering, developing innovative multimodal and scale-bridging microscopy methods and applying them to model systems such as nanostructured films and hierarchical materials. CorMic provides a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment at the Center for Nanoanalysis and Electron Microscopy (CENEM), offering a comprehensive qualification framework covering scientific, technical, and transferable skills. The program fosters international collaboration and personal development through mentoring, research exchanges, and networking with leading partners. Graduates will be equipped to take on leadership roles in academia or industry, driving innovation in sustainable materials technologies. Applicants should have an M.Sc. in physics, chemistry, materials science, computational engineering, or related disciplines. Proficient oral and written communication skills in English are required; knowledge of German is welcome. The positions are funded according to the collective wage agreement for the public service of the German Länder (TV-L E 13) or Bavarian Public Servants Remuneration Act (BayBesG), with regular promotion, annual bonus, 30 days annual leave, occupational pension scheme, subsidized food and drinks, family-friendly environment, flexible working hours, and active health management. The positions are available for up to four years, starting 01.04.2026. Applications should include a letter of motivation, CV, academic transcripts and certificates, publications and oral presentations, and academic letters of recommendation. Applicants are encouraged to mention up to three projects of interest. The application deadline is 07.01.2026. For more information, visit the CorMic webpage or contact Professor Erdmann Spiecker at [email protected].
