Behaviour of Shear Walls Consisting of Steel Frame and FRP Infill Plate Kingston University in United Kingdom

This PhD project at Kingston University investigates the behaviour of shear walls constructed from steel frames and fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) infill plates, a cutting-edge topic in modern structural engineering. Thin infill plate shear walls are increasingly popular in high-rise buildings due to their low weight and high ultimate capacity, offering significant advantages in terms of design flexibility and structural performance. The research will focus on the mechanical properties, load-bearing capacity, and failure mechanisms of these composite wall systems, aiming to optimize their use in contemporary construction.

Students will join the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and the Environment, working under the supervision of Dr T Donchev. The project will involve both experimental and computational approaches to assess the performance of steel-FRP shear walls under various loading conditions, including seismic and wind loads. The outcomes are expected to contribute to safer, more efficient building designs and inform future standards in structural engineering.

Applicants should have a strong background in civil or structural engineering, with relevant skills in structural analysis and materials science. While funding is not currently available, the position offers an excellent opportunity to engage in impactful research at a leading UK institution.
