About this position
Fairman Knight and Sons UK Limited
are very proud and happy to be launching a PhD position at
University of Leeds
to start later this year 2025.
The aims of the study have been summarised by Alan Javier Hernandez Alvarez :
“Harnessing the Power of Black Soldier Fly Larvae for Bioactive Peptide Discovery”
This project aims to explore the potential of Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) as a sustainable source of bioactive peptides, with a focus on antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). Specifically, we will investigate how different feedstocks influence the production of AMPs, both those naturally produced in situ by the larvae and those generated through enzymatic-assisted hydrolysis. Additionally, we will assess the impact of BSFL-derived bioactivities on the pig microbiome, examining their potential role in modulating gut microbial composition and enhancing gut health. This study integrates bioprocess optimization, peptide characterization, and microbiome analysis, contributing to the development of novel functional ingredients for livestock health and disease prevention.
This is a hugh inflexion point for studies in regards to Black Soldier Fly Larvae and the highly important antimicrobial peptides they yield and in the context of the new Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs legislature in regards to Animal Feeds this is hopefully ground breaking and immediately transferable into the UK Agricultural sector.
